Meet Lisa Slavinski, a Champion in Her Own Right

Go Bills! Go Broncos! That is what you commonly hear when Lisa Slavinski is on duty at Benefits in Action. This year she’ll be glued to the game as both teams fight for a spot in the championship game, but we know that Lisa herself is a true champion.

Benefits in Action is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people obtain the community resources needed to thrive. Lisa is one of our experienced Modified

Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) Medicaid and SNAP navigators, as well as one of our Intake Coordinators. What that means is that Lisa helps people of all ages schedule appointments to apply for benefits, and also does the applications for benefits for them.

Lisa comes to us with a lot of experience. She worked in the healthcare field as a registered nurse for many years before coming to Benefits in Action, including with governmental and nonprofit organizations. Lisa also has a passion for older adult populations who seem to be forgotten when thinking about benefits.

Lisa answers incoming calls and uses her knowledge of benefit programs to ensure that clients get an appointment with the correct Benefits in Action navigator and for the correct services including SNAP, Medicaid, Medicare, energy assistance and more. Lisa is particularly adept in getting the whole story and making sure that clients get the right appointments for the services they need. Even when BIA is unable to help with a particular issue, Lisa can sometimes get clients connected to the organizations that provide those resources.

Lisa enjoys assisting clients with what is often an arduous process to apply for and renew their benefits. Many people are not computer savvy, and county Departments of Human Services generally do not conduct phone appointments. So, Lisa fills a vital gap by making benefits accessible to those who cannot travel to county offices in person.

Lisa has assisted many clients in an ongoing capacity. She helped one client in particular apply for Medicaid, SNAP, the Colorado Child Care Assistance Program, and helped them find domestic violence resources through Porchlight. Over two years, Lisa has built a relationship and rapport with this client and has helped her relieve stress and remove barriers to secure finances. In the client’s own words, “I wouldn’t know how to get these things done without BIA’s assistance.”

“I’m very proud of the work I do and enjoy helping change people’s lives on a daily basis,” explains Lisa. “One of the things that makes us great is that we’re an independent nonprofit – not part of any county in Colorado – so we can provide tailored services to suit anyone’s needs.”

If you or anyone you know needs assistance applying for benefits like SNAP, various forms of Medicaid, Cash Assistance Programs, Connect for Health, and Social Security, please contact Benefits in Action at 720-221-8354 or via email at info@benefitsinaction.org to schedule an appointment with Lisa or one of our other navigators.

Until next time, stay healthy and safe.
